TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My teaching philosophy is founded on instilling in students the importance of collaboration, creative problem-solving, and communication.  I believe that collaboration provides the foundation for a successful career in theatre or in any other profession.  The abilities to work with others and offer and accept criticism are fundamental skills for theatre designers, technicians, directors, actors, professors, etc.  Similarly, I endeavor to teach all my students how to problem-solve, from putting up a show on a shoe-string budget to juggling the conflicting demands of an expressionist script.  I also gear my classes toward the development of students’ communication skills, both oral and written.  In the spirit of a true liberal arts education, I believe that students must be able to enter the job market with the ability to express themselves clearly and intelligently.  In the process of teaching Theatre, I want to teach students how they can successfully navigate the world after graduation, regardless of their career choices.
